The fact that Metroid: Zero Mission exists means there’s no real reason to play the original NES game. Average players like me will finish this in four hours – better gamers can do it far quicker.

It’s short, but that adds to its appeal, especially if you want to see what the series is all about. Metroid: Zero Mission, released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, is a remake of the first Metroid. And if you’re wondering ‘what Metroid game should I start with’, play them in this order. With that out of the way, these are the essential Metroid games to play before Metroid Dread. Best Metroid games: what Metroid game should I start with?

If Nintendo followed these suggestions, they’d have released versions of all five ‘main’ story games for Switch, plus the Metroid Prime series. As well as Metroid Prime Trilogy, how about a Metroid Advance Collection featuring Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion, in the vein of the Castlevania Advance Collection?Īnd what about bringing 2017’s Metroid: Samus Returns to the Switch? This late-cycle 3DS game was a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus, and it was a belter. It’s not like there aren’t possibilities for re-releases. With no Virtual Console – and only NES and SNES games available through Nintendo Switch Online – these are the Metroid games you can play through that service:Ī paltry list – and only the first and third games in the series. It’s a classic, no doubt – but quite why they’d do this when they’ve already packaged the trilogy up for Wii and Wii U is a mystery (it’s Nintendo, I suppose). This has so far failed to materialise.Ī recent, more unfortunate rumour stated that Nintendo is preparing to release a remaster of only the first Metroid Prime on the Switch. Wait – but what Metroid games can I play on Switch?Ī quick note – Nintendo has been spectacularly stingy with re-releasing past Metroid games on the Nintendo Switch.Įver since Nintendo announced Metroid Prime 4 way back in 2017, ‘industry insiders’ have consistently assured fans that the company has a Switch release of the Metroid Prime Trilogy compilation ready to go. Switch gamers interested in this latest title may therefore be wondering what Metroid games to play before that one. The popularity of the Nintendo Switch, along with that huge time gap, means that Metroid Dread will be many people’s first experience with the series. A detailed world with an unrealistic artstyle can absolutely work- as is the case with Mario Odyssey.īut in my opinion, part of why Nintendo games stand out, the reason their games and characters are memorable is because none of them adhere to the same realism that nearly every other major company seems to think is the only style. Before Metroid Dread, the last brand new entry in the Metroid series was Metroid: Other M, released in 2010. I think some level of realism would work. Sure, you could do a lot with the rest of the game's design to counter that (ex: suit design, creature design, world design, etc.), but then you're left with an interesting world and bland-looking characters. They aren't memorable or interesting because they aren't visually unique and don't stand out from the sea of similar-looking games. Realistic art styles always feel so generic.

I really hope this doesn't indicate that the game (or worse yet, the franchise) is headed in an overly realistic direction.
